Make Mother’s Day Bloom Bright🌷
|
|
|
Mother's Day arrives every year just as the plants are waking up again. If there’s a mom in your life who loves to grow things, we invite you to visit and find the perfect garden gift, whether it's a piece of outdoor art, a tool to make her work outside easier and more enjoyable, or a plant that you know she'll love.
You can also gift her with the fun of a Hoerr Nursery shopping trip! A Mother’s Day gift card isn't an afterthought; it's an experience! We offer gift cards both in-store and online, so whether you’re planning ahead or need something quick, it’s an easy way to give Mom the opportunity to pick out whatever she loves the most. You could even plan a shopping trip together, making the day out part of the gift itself.
We love to celebrate the gardeners in our lives. If you pick out something extra-special this Mother's Day (or recieve a garden gift that you love), send us a photo or tag us! We might even share it in a future newsletter.
If you’re still not sure where to start, stop in. We’d be happy to help you find something that feels just right!

Plant a tree that lasts for generations. 🌳
|
|
|
This Arbor Day, we’re celebrating a century of growing with you, and that got us thinking about the trees that will outlive us all. Here are nine of the longest-lived trees for Central Illinois:
1. Bald Cypress
The longest-lived trees in Illinois, many along the Cache River are at least 1,000 years old!
2. Ginkgo biloba
Able to live indefinitely due to a lack of programmed senescence, meaning they do not die of old age but rather from external factors like disease or extreme environmental stress. Some specimens are 1,000-3,000 years old!
3. Oaks
Famously long-lived. The Giant Oak, a burr oak here in peoria (pictured) is estimated to be between 300 and 500 years old.
4. American Beech
A slow-growing tree that typically lives for 300 to 400 years.
5. Eastern White Pine
One of Illinois' native evergreens, typically lives for 200 to 250 years, with some trees reaching over 400 years of age in ideal conditions.
6. Hickories
Among the toughest, longest-lived native hardwoods in Illinois, especially on well-drained sites, surviving 200-300 years.
7. Eastern Red Cedar
May live 100-300 years on dry or rocky sites, up to 800 years in the wild.
8. Tulip Trees
Typical lifespan of 200 to 300 years. There's a stately specimen in the Metamora town square, and another near the Frank Lloyd Wright house in Peoria.
9. Sugar Maples
May live 300 to 400 years in ideal conditions, but even in challenging urban environments they are capable of living 100 years or more.
If you're looking to plant a lasting legacy this Arbor Day, stop by for a visit!
