This year marks 100 years since D.A. Hoerr started out delivering coal and topsoil right here in Peoria, long before his family business would come to be known as a nursery. This week, third-generation owner Nate Hoerr sat down with CI Proud's Gretchen Wirtz as part of their Loving Living Local segment to talk about how that delivery route grew into the Hoerr Nursery you know today, what's changed, and what hasn't. 3 Types of Plants for Perfect Fall Pots

Fall annuals may be less famous than their spring cousins, but they're no less exciting! With a full selection of autumn plants in stock, we've got exactly what you need to give your garden beds and porch pots that fall feeling. Here's a quick guide to what's available and how to put it to work:

Mums say "autumn" the moment you see them, and we've got them in multiple sizes and color combinations, starting at just $4.99. Annual black-eyed susan adds big, cheerful blooms, while celosia features feathery flowers that look a bit like troll doll hair.
|
|
|
Other great fall-blooming options include marigolds, snapdragons, petunias, calibrachoa (a smaller-relative of the petunia), kalanchoe, bidens, zinnias, gerberas, strawflower, morning glory, lantana, and tithonia (Mexican sunflower, known for its bright orange blooms). Begonias round out the flowering annual lineup with reliable color in both sun and shade.

Some plants are grown for their color and texture, rather than their flowers. Crotons are a standout example, with leathery leaves splashed in dramatic red and orange. Ornamental cabbage and kale are grown for their bold purple-blue color and ruffled leaves. Ornamental peppers are grown for their jewel-toned fruit, with some varieties offering near-black leaves as well. Other great elements for texture and color include annual grasses and millets, alternanthera, with its wine-red leaves, the cascading seedheads of amaranth, chartreuse sedum, silvery dusty miller, and architectural bear's breeches.

Trailing & Spilling Plants

In hanging baskets, raised planters or containers, add drama with plants that cascade over the sides. Ivy and creeping vinca give you trailing greenery, while wire vine offers a lacy look. For striking color as well as graceful form, Golden creeping Jenny, sweet potato vine, purple tradescantia, red apple mezoo and licorice plant each offer a unique and striking look.

Got a sunny windowsill or patio? You can grow herbs! Pre-planted containers are available now, as well as individual pots of herbs. If you'd like to clip fresh flavor from your windowsill all winter, be sure to get your indoor herbs settled before the cold sets in. Just keep them moderately watered when they start to dry out, clip them often, and they'll keep giving you flavorful leaves for meals.

Fall is one of the best times to plant a tree. The cooler weather is ideal for establishing roots, giving the trees a head start come spring. And right now, a select group of our homegrown trees is priced to move.
Every season we raise a selection of homegrown trees here at the nursery, and sometimes we reach the fall season with just a few of certain varieties left. Rather than overwinter them in such small numbers, we discount the trees, and pass the savings on to you. Regular list prices start at $282 and vary by variety and size.

- 40% off select B&B (balled and burlapped) evergreens
If you have a specific shade tree, flowering tree, or evergreen in mind, our regular selection of trees is still fully stocked and ready to plant this fall.
