100 Days. 100 Years.
$100 Trees.

Trees have long been an integral part of what we do at Hoerr Nursery. We've been planting them, growing them, and helping them thrive right here in Central Illinois for decades.
In 1969, Hoerr Nursery planted the Senator Everett M. Dirksen Memorial Oak on the White House lawn, honoring a Central Illinois native whose leadership was instrumental in the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968. Pictured here are Tim, Nate & Ben Hoerr standing in front of the freshly planted tree.

When is it safe to plant?
|
|
|
Spring this year is keeping gardeners guessing! It’s still too early for summer favorites like tomatoes and peppers, but we've got plenty of Hoerr homegrown favorites on the way. In the meantime, there’s plenty you can do right now to get growing.

Some plants will keep on growing despite the rollercoaster temperatures.
Every perennial, tree, and shrub you’ll find up front is acclimated and ready to go home with you. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just ask! We’ll check the hoop houses and bring it up if it’s ready. If it's in stock but it's still asleep, we'll want to wait a little longer and make sure that it's healthy. Every plant grows at its own pace, and we want to make sure that we're sending you home with something that will thrive.
Hardy vegetables like kale and broccoli, as well as annual flowers like pansies, nemesia and snapdragons can safely handle cool nights, giving you an early start on the spring season.

Strong roots and good neighbors are what's helped us to grow for a hundred years, and that includes you! Here's to the next hundred years of growing together.🌳

Tomatoes: 65°F to 70°F

Impatiens: 60–65°F
As of this week, local soil temperatures have been in the 50s. The best way to know when it’s time? Use a soil thermometer (available in our Garden Center) and plant only when the ground is consistently warm. If you’re eager to start early, you can create a warm microclimate with a simple plastic low tunnel—a mini greenhouse that helps the soil heat faster. Just remember to roll up the sides on hot days to avoid overheating!

Whether you warm the soil yourself or let nature do the work, patience pays off. Happy warm-season flowers and veggies will reward you with fruit and flowers all summer long.

“As Soon as the Soil Can Be Worked”
|
|
|
You’ll often read that phrase on seed packets, but what does it really mean? Put simply, it means that the soil is no longer mud. If you can grab a handful of soil, squeeze it, and it crumbles instead of forming a ball of muck, it’s ready. Working with wet soil will cause compaction, which prevents plant roots from growing well. Once again, a little patience pays off.

Growing here in Central Illinois means rolling with the weather! In the Peoria area, waiting until after Mother’s Day is a safe bet for putting out frost-sensitive plants. After all, temperature matters as much as sunshine and rain. Until then, plant what’s tough, prepare your beds, and let the season shake itself out. And if you need specific advice, remember: we're here for you!
🪴Happy gardening!
