Milkweed Matters for Monarchs—And You!
The “Super Generation” of monarchs is very special. The last generation of butterflies to hatch each year, they emerge late summer through early fall. They live for 8-9 months, making the incredible journey south to overwinter in Mexico, and then flying back north to start the cycle over again.
You can support the monarchs on their journey by adding some (or more!) milkweed to your yard. Choose swamp milkweed (pictured above) if your garden stays moist or butterfly milkweed (pictured left) for drier spots.
Monarchs lay their eggs only on milkweed plants, and the caterpillars feed only on milkweed leaves. The bitter compounds in the milkweed make the monarchs unpalatable to predators, providing them with a critical defense. Adult monarchs will also use nectar from the flowers for food.

If you come in shopping for milkweed with us, you'll probably notice aphids on our plants. Don't worry! These little buggers are a great indicator of a pesticide-free environment. We skip spraying to keep the bees and butterflies safe, and instead, we pull on our gloves and squish the aphids by hand. It’s all about creating a welcoming home for pollinators. So go ahead, plant some milkweed this season, and watch your garden buzz and flutter with life!
