3 Hibiscus to Try
Plant a Summer Show🌺
"Hibiscus" is one of those names that belongs to several completely different plants. In Central Illinois there are actually three types of hibiscus available to gardeners, and only one of them is associated with hula dancing and Hawaiian luaus. But they can all bring a lot of summer drama to your yard!

The Shrub: Rose of Sharon
Hibiscus syriacus
About as low-maintenance as flowering shrubs get, rose of sharon blooms generously from July all the way to frost. The larger varieties make an excellent privacy screen, while as a patio tree it makes a striking focal point in a smaller space. If you've grown Rose of Sharon before and dealt with volunteer seedlings popping up all over the yard, it's also worth knowing that the varieties we stock are sterile.
Rose of sharon starts at $55.99 in a two gallon container.

The Perennial: Hardy Hibiscus
Hibiscus moscheutos
A striking flower that dies back to the ground in winter and returns from the roots in late spring. For sheer flower power, this is one of our most standout plants, with some varieties blooming bigger than a human hand.
What it lacks in year-round woody structure, it makes up for in sheer flower power: blooms regularly grow larger than a human hand, in bold, eye-catching colors, with the same long July-to-frost bloom season as Rose of Sharon. It's a great choice if you want maximum visual drama in a perennial bed without a permanent shrub taking up space.
Hardy hibiscus start at $19.99.

The Patio Plant: Tropical Hibiscus
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis
This is the one most people picture when they think "hibiscus." It's not winter-hardy here, which is why it's typically grown in a container, rather than being planted in the ground. It can be overwintered, but it wants very specific conditions: a warm room, bright light, and moist soil without being soggy. Whether you keep it over the winter or not, it's a striking centerpiece on a porch or patio during the warm season.
