Pre-Order Your Annuals

and We'll Grow Them Just For You!

Carley, our annual grower, is already planning for 2027.

Did you know that we grow most of our spring annuals in-house? It takes a lot of planning and preparation, work that starts even as this year's growing season is winding down.

This year, we’re giving our newsletter readers exclusive early access to get in on that process. You can pre-order annuals now for pickup in spring, and by then your custom-grown order will be hardened off and ready to plant outdoors.

Pre-orders at a glance
  • Order by: January 31st, 2027
  • Minimum order: $200
  • Pickup: May 1st through May 22nd, 2027, at Hoerr Nursery in Peoria
  • How to order: build a wish list of annuals in our online plant database and email it to Sarah, in our annuals department.

Pricing
  • 4.5" pots: $6.99 each. Individual plants big enough to include in mixed pots and planters.
  • 10" hanging baskets: $29.99 each. Display them on your porch, or take the hanger off and plant the entire pot in a planter.
Select annuals are also available in cell packs and flats.
  • Cell packs: $2.99 each, which is about 75¢ per plant! A cell pack is a small tray holding four plants. These are best for filling in around larger plantings.
  • Flats: $36 each. A flat is twelve cell packs, which is 48 plants. Good for in-ground landscaping where you want a big block of color.
The following plants can be preordered in cell packs or flats:
  • Petunias, in red, pink, white, dark purple, or yellow
  • African marigolds, yellow or orange
  • Sweet alyssum, white or purple
  • Bedding salvia, blue, red, white, salmon, or purple
  • Zinnias, State Fair mix, pink, yellow, or orange
  • Blue lobelia
  • Portulaca, pink, red, yellow, or orange
  • Bedding begonias, green-leafed type, red, white, or pink
  • Shade impatiens, pink, red, orange, salmon, white, or violet
  • Dusty miller
If you don't see one of these options available to add to your wish list, (for instance, State Fair mix Zinnias), just write your selections in at the bottom before you send it to us.

How to place your pre-order
Watch the video instructions here, or follow the written steps below:
  1. Go to our online plant database and click the user agreement. Scroll down to the section that says "annuals" and open the “Advanced Search” feature.
    • You may also preorder from the "herbs" section, but please do not include selections from any of the other categories.
  2. Look up a specific plant by typing its name into the search bar, or scroll down to search by features such as plant height, specific shades of color, and sun or shade tolerance.
  3. In the search results, find the “add to my wish list” box on the right-hand side of each plant. Check the box for every plant you’d like.
  4. When you’re ready to send your list, click “view my wish list” at the top of the page.
  5. To the left of each plant on your list, enter how many you would like.
    • For pots and hanging baskets, enter the number of pots or baskets.
    • For cell packs and flats, enter the number of cell packs or flats, not the number of plants.
      • For example, if you want one flat, enter 1, even though you’ll receive 48 plants.
  6. In the bottom right corner of your wish list, click “email my wish list.” A form will appear.
  7. Fill out the form with your contact information. In the “additional comments or instructions” box, tell us which of the four sizes you would like for each plant on your list. For example:
    • Impatiens: 4 flats
    • Lantana: 3 pots
    • Zinnias: 6 cell packs
    • Geraniums: 6 hanging baskets
  8. Click “Submit Now” at the bottom of the form to send us your pre-order.
A selection of the results from a search for "lemon yellow" flowers.

What happens next
Your wish list goes to Sarah, who will get in touch to finalize your pre-order. In spring, we’ll contact you to confirm your pickup date. You can reach her with questions at any time by email.

Please note that not every plant is available in all four sizes. If there is an issue with your order, we’ll call you to discuss it and suggest alternatives. Perennials, shrubs and trees are grown on a different schedule, so please don’t include them on your wish list.
Need inspiration?
Have a look through our annual recipe book. It demonstrates some plant combinations that work well together, regardless of what color combinations you like best.

Fall is a great time to plan out your spring planting. The garden is going quiet, but the way that this year went is still fresh in your mind---what worked, and where you could have used more color. Take a stroll around, and then sit down and build your wish list. Send it off to Sarah, and by the time May arrives, we'll have your plants all grown up and ready to go.

Does Your Houseplant Need Help?

A large ZZ plant arrived in Container Cove awhile back looking droopy, but it's begun to perk up under Ayden’s care, and now it’s going home with a new watering schedule.

If your houseplant has you guessing, bring it to Container Cove. For a small fee, Ayden will look it over and nurse it back to health if necessary. You'll go home with a healthier plant, armed with the information you need to keep it happy.
Although the garden goes quiet this time of year, the gardener in us still likes to work with nature. That's why come mid-November, we'll be offering fresh fir and pine for DIY holiday decor, handcrafted wreaths and garden-themed decor, plus our signature Christmas porch pots.

We're gearing up for our 100th Anniversary Christmas celebration here at Hoerr Nursery, with plans to make it extra special. Details to come in our next newsletter, but for now, here's a save-the-date for all our upcoming Saturday events. Stop in on Saturdays to take part in one of our signature workshops. As Christmas gets closer, visitors will have the chance to snap some photos with St. Nick, enjoy incredible treats from our visiting bakeries, warm up with a hot drink, and roast a marshmallow.

Care to join us? Workshop details and sign-ups are at hoerrnursery.com/workshops.
