Fall Perennials: πŸ‚ See What You’re Missing!

Fall Perennials To Make Your Garden Glow

If your garden is missing fall perennials, you’re missing out on one of the sweetest joys of the changing seasons! Just when cooler days arrive and the trees start showing off their colors, these plants step forward to keep the garden alive with blooms, texture, and movement.

Fall is a wonderful time to plant. The soil is still warm and welcoming to roots, while cooler air reduces stress on new perennials, shrubs and trees. Here are just a few of the fall perennial favorites that will keep your garden glowing well into the crisp days of October:

October Skies Aster

Smothered in pale lavender-blue flowers, October Skies aster pairs beautifully with yellow-flowering perennials, and provides a much-needed nectar source for pollinators as the season winds down.

Black-Eyed Susans

A true Illinois native, Black-Eyed Susans are among the most beloved late-season perennials. These golden beauties keep flowering from midsummer through early fall. Snip a bouquet for the kitchen table, and they’ll reward you with even more blooms.

Stonecrop (Sedum)

Known for their easy-going temperament, Stonecrops are fall superstars. When September rolls in, their flower heads ripen into shades of rosy pink, burgundy, or copper, attracting late-season butterflies and bees. They’re beautiful on their own or massed in drifts for bold seasonal drama.

Heliopsis (False Sunflower)

If you love sunny hues, Heliopsis will steal your heart. Looking a bit like a perennial sunflower, it bursts into waves of bright blooms that last and last. Great for rain gardens, or spots that get a little more water than average.

Ornamental Grasses

Nothing embodies autumn quite like ornamental grasses. Their feathery plumes catch the slanting light of fall afternoons, bringing movement and life to the landscape. From little bluestem to towering miscanthus, ornamental grasses add both structure and softness to the garden. Plus, many keep their beauty well into winter!

Hardy Hibiscus

Enormous dinner-plate blooms come in dazzling reds, pinks, and whites, with many types blooming until frost. These showy garden focal points act as a great counterpoint to drifts of smaller fall flowers.
