Every Gardener
Needs a Rain Gauge
|
|
If thereβs one small investment that can make a big difference in your gardenβs health, itβs a rain gauge. These handy tools are affordable and easy to use. Weather apps and news reports offer city-wide averages, but rainfall can vary dramatically from one backyard to the next, even within the same city! Too much water can be just as harmful as too little. By measuring rainfall, youβll know exactly when to supplement with a hose or sprinkler. Youβll make smarter watering decisions, and give your plants the best chance to thrive.

You can plant nearly anything during the summer, as long as you monitor rainfall and provide supplemental water when needed. A rain gauge takes the guesswork out of summer gardening. We carry a selection of quality rain gauges in the garden center, whether you're seeking a straightforward tool or something a bit more whimsical to brighten your beds. Let us know if youβd like a recommendation! We love matching people with the right tools for their gardens.
How much rain is enough? Hereβs what you need to know:
|
|
- Small amounts of rainβless than Β½ inch in a single eventβare rarely enough to soak the soil deeply. Most established trees and shrubs need about 1 inch of water per week, delivered slowly so that it penetrates to the roots.
- Every plant needs supplemental water for at least its first year, even drought-tolerant varieties.
- If your rain gauge shows less than 1 inch of rain in a week, itβs time to water, especially for new plantings.

Watering is especially important if youβre adding new trees to your landscape. Weβre excited to offer a fresh selection of homegrown trees this month, almost all grown in air pruning or root trapping containers for the healthiest root systems and the best chance at long-term success in your landscape. Our current lineup includes:
|
|
Maples

Ginkgo
Honeylocust
Tulip tree
Magnolias
Crabapples
Blackgum
Oaks

These trees are carefully selected and nurtured to thrive in our local climate. Whatever you're planting this summer, whether it's trees, shrubs, annuals, or perennials, just add water (and a rain gauge to track it!)
