Annual Flowers to Attract Garden Friends!
|
|
The first Monarch butterflies have been sighted in Central Illinois, fluttering in right on schedule for their incredible spring migration. This annual arrival is a highlight for gardeners and nature lovers alike, and itβs the perfect time to refresh your garden with plants that support not only Monarchs, but a whole host of pollinators.
Whether you've got an existing pollinator garden or not, these annuals can tuck in to practically any sunny spot, adding more nectar and pollen sources to what you already have to offer.

Great Annuals for Pollinators
|
|
Annual flowers bloom all season long, providing continuous food for hummingbirds, bees and butterflies when some perennials may not be flowering. Remember that pollinators need access to the nectar and pollen at the center of the flower, so choose open-centered types rather than double blooms.
Here are some great options to attract a host of floral visitors to your garden:
|
|
1. Zinnia
2. Annual Salvia
3. Bedding Verbena
4. African Daisy
5. Dill (also a Swallowtail Butterfly host plant!)
6. Bidens
7. Cuphea
8. Sunflower
9. Spike Celosia
10. Purpletop Verbena
11. Moss Rose
12. Morning Glory
13. Lantana
14. Cleome
|
|
|
By layering annuals into your perennial garden, you create a richer, more inviting habitat that supports pollinators during critical times of their life cycles. This simple step helps sustain Monarchs and many other beneficial insects, making your garden a buzzing oasis of life.
Happy gardening, and keep an eye out for those fluttering orange wings in your backyard!
