A festive fruit wreath
for backyard birds

If your bird bath is sitting empty right now, why not invite your backyard birds to enjoy it for the Christmas season?
To create a winter fruit wreath that your birds will love, you'll need:
- A bundt pan
-Some fruit for the birds. Try cranberries, sliced apples, and/or sliced citrus
-Water or 3 blocks of suet, any type
-Decorative elements, such as evergreen sprigs, spices, and small pinecones (optional)
-Bundled evergreen boughs for the wreath to sit on, or a decorative ribbon to hang your wreath with.

Directions:
Place some of your chosen items in the bottom of the bunt pan. Add enough water to surround them without floating, and freeze that layer.

|
|
Repeat until your pan is full, then run hot water over the outside of the bundt pan to release the frozen wreath. It will melt gradually, releasing the tasty fruit a little at a time.

|
|
For a different approach, melt 3 blocks of suet in a pot over low heat. Remove the pot from the stove once the suet is melted and stir in a good amount of birdseed, plus fresh or dried fruit. Pour into a bundt pan and refrigerate overnight to set.
Displaying your wreath:

If you're using a bird bath or other flat surface, arrange evergreen boughs in an attractive way and set the wreath on top.
|
|
|
|
To hang your bird wreath, tie an attractive ribbon through the middle and finish with a bow. Either way, your backyard birds will enjoy the Christmas gift!

|

A few more notes about winter bird baths:
-Metal, resin and fiberglass types are frost safe. Other types should be protected or brought indoors for winter.
-If you have an outdoor electrical outlet available near your bird bath, consider adding a de-icer to it and keeping it filled with water year round.
-Floating ping pong balls in the water and placing the bird bath in a sunny spot can also help to prevent ice forming during minor freezes.
Either way, your feathered friends will appreciate a source of fresh winter water!
