Stately tree with a straight trunk and a rounded crown. Works well either in naturalizing or as a specimen on moist, acidic, bottomland-type soils however is found natively on dry, rocky soils as well. Gray-black bark contrasts dramatically to the dark glossy green leaves. Brilliant shades of red, orange, and purple in fall. An excellent specimen tree. Tolerates wet locations and can grow in standing water.
