Stepables® Takes Big Steps at Hoerr Nursery

Peoria, IL - Hoerr Nursery has created an innovative display of Stepables® products at its Garden Center in Peoria, IL.

The third generation, family owned business has created a unique product in a pyramid-structure filled with planting soil and planted with a combination of Stepables® ground cover products and herbs. “We are still in the prototype phase with these structures,” said Jane Mason, Marketing Director, Hoerr Nursery. “We’re calling it ‘My Green Space’© because it is something you can carry around with you wherever you want a little box of green.”

“Frances Hopkins, president of Under a Foot Plant Company, the owner of Stepables, discussed with us the idea of inserting Stepables through a screen for a creative approach. As a ground cover, it is quite adapatable to challenging terrain, so this almost vertical format is not impossible. And, it can thrive and mingle with other harmonious plants, such as herbs,” said Mason. “Plus it’s a perennial – which means it will reappear every year.”

The nursery has created a couple different prototypes of the unusual format, including the “My Green Space” pyramid. They are also using some antique, recycled window screens, backed with a channel of soil, to create a growing piece of art to be placed on a patio, a table, or to be used as a barrier for an undesirable view.

Additionally, the talented staff at the nursery has created dramatic planters featuring Stepables products tucked in with other diminutive varieties.

“We encourage our customers to learn about benefits of Stepables because frequently it’s exactly what they’re looking for as a solution to a challenging place in their gardens. Stepables work great around rocks or stone steps and they are what they say – they actually can be stepped on and walked on. The tag in each pot tells the amount of foot-traffic each plant tolerates. Many of the varieties that we carry bloom and several have a great fragrance when they are walked on,” said Mason.

“We are also delighted that our display is featured on the Stepables website as an outstanding example,” said Mason. “This year we added a touch of whimsy to our display by adding a little ‘clothesline’ to the top of the display and arranging a collection of adorable little socks from very young children just to emphasize that the product is ideal for kids, pets and certainly adults to slip off their shoes and socks and enjoy walking on.”

The appealing, creative display of Stepables and the new product prototypes are on display at Hoerr Nursery, 8020 Shade Tree Drive, Peoria, IL 61615, just north of the Shoppes at Grand Prairie on Route 91.
