Planting Shrubs in the Snow?

Monday, Dec., 11, Hoerr Nursery will be working in the snow on a landscape job planting shrubs and perennials.

Mike McClay, Hoerr Nursery Landscape Project Manager, said, "We'll have a crew at the new Krispe Kreme on Monday. That's when it needs to be done, come rain or snow or whatever. We'll bring in equipment to scoop out the snow; then the crew will start planting."

Jack Hoerr, Co-Owner Hoerr Nursery and Sod Manager, said, "In the snow, as long as the ground isn't frozen, we can harvest and plant sod. Or, as in this case, plant shrubs and perennials."

On Monday, the Hoerr Nursery crew is planning to plant over 100 shrubs and perennials around the new Krispe Kreme location on Glen near War Memorial in Peoria.

Why the big rush? The store is planning to open on Thursday, December 14th.
Snow acts as an insulating blanket to keep the ground from freezing. In the winter, perennials, shrubs and sod are dormant, so when the plants are planted, the snow helps protect them. As the snow melts, it'll water the new plants and settle them into the landscape.

So, now you know you can keep those landscaping projects on your "honey do" list until the ground freezes.
