Moving Trees with Ease and for a Mission

Canton, Ill. – Friday, January 19, Ken Downing of Hoerr Nursery and “Big John” -- the nursery’s giant tree spade, spent a day moving trees at Camp Kearney for the South Side Mission. The project wasn’t your typical landscaping job nor did it require your typical, everyday landscaping tools. But with the help of willing volunteers from South Side Mission, Hoerr Nursery and “Big John,” the team managed to move about 10 trees in under six hours – an equivalent of about a $5,000 contribution in landscaping services. The project was to assist with the landscape renovation at the camp.

“South Side Mission and Camp Kearney in particular are thrilled with the partnership with Hoerr Nursery,” said Meg Newell, Director of Public Relations and Marketing. “They have been a faithful supporter of South Side Mission for many years and are committed to the lives of those less fortunate.”

Hoerr Nursery specializes in growing and planting all sizes of trees. Several tree spades are busy throughout the year, whenever the ground is not frozen, to plant or move trees. The nursery grows over 12,000 trees on their various tree farms.
