Daylily

Peoria, IL. – Although most nurseries offer only two varieties of daylilies, Hoerr Nursery offers 35 varieties. It is a specialty of the award-winning nursery in Central Illinois. Some of the perennial buyers and nursery managers at Hoerr Nursery happen to be passionate about daylilies.

Ella Maxwell, Assistant Garden Center Manager said, “If you are looking for unusual daylilies like some with magnificent flowers or some with ruffles or two-tone blooms, or unusual colors like purples, we have them at Hoerr Nursery. The daylilies are just starting to bloom now and will continue through July. Daylilies are a good addition since they flower when some of the other blooms in the garden are waning. Plus there are re-blooming varieties which will flower sporadically later in the summer. It’s a perfect time to plant them now.”

Some people get Asiatic or Oriental lilies confused with daylilies. There are important differences, though. With daylilies each bloom lasts only a single day. Most daylilies will open at sunrise and wither at sunset—hence the name daylily.

Lilies, in the genus Lilium, are herbaceous flowering plants normally grown from bulbs. Two well known lilies in this family are the traditional Easter Lily (not hardy in Central Illinois) and the Stargazer cultivar, which can be hardy in the Peoria area. Maxwell said, “Some other great qualities about lilies is that there are oodles of varieties to pick from. Plus, they are fragrant, and the daylilies are not.”

Maxwell says that there is a place for many types of lilies in the garden, “With the daylilies, each clump has lots of scapes and although each flower only lasts for a day, the clump may bloom for weeks, where with Asiatic lilies, the blooms may last for a week, and that is it for that plant.”

There are 35 varieties of daylilies are available at Hoerr Nursery in the “Sunny Perennial” yard. The Garden Experts on staff will be able to answer your questions about which lilies will be right for your landscape.
