Hoerr Nursery Prepares Students for Careers in Horticulture
Monday, October 12, 2009Peoria, IL – Hoerr Nursery hosted nine college students from all across Central Illinois last week as a part of a program designed to give horticulture students some hands-on experience in the “Green Industry”.
Over the course of several months, the H.O.P.E. (Horticultural, Occupational and Professional Experience) Program will provide an opportunity for a select group of students to visit and work with businesses across Central Illinois. Sponsored by the Illinois Green Industry Association (IGIA), H.O.P.E. was created to “provide college students with an opportunity to experience the Illinois Nursery Industry with a “hands-on” approach to prepare them for careers in horticulture”.
On October 1-2, the students worked with several horticulture professionals at Hoerr Nursery from Landscape Design and nursery production to the retail experience, customer service and merchandising. On both days, the students also participated in guest speaker presentations.
“Because of our wide scope of business, we were able to provide the students with a hands-on experience they can’t find in a classroom,” said Dave Ploussard, Garden Center Manager at Hoerr Nursery. “The H.O.P.E. Program is a rare and invaluable opportunity for students to see what the ‘Green Industry’ is all about.”
