The new 10,000 sq ft retail greenhouse at Hoerr Nursery is currently launching its Spring Opening. The greenhouse is open all year long, as is Hoerr Nursery. But spring is when it really bursts into life. It is full of hundreds of hanging baskets, and row after row of annuals, herbs, vegetables, tropicals and beautiful containers of mixed plants radiant with colorful foliage and flowers.
Customers arrive throughout the year looking for ideas for their gardens. The theme of the GardenHouse Spring Opening capitalizes on meeting that quest in their customers. The theme is: IDEAS! On Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19, there will be resource staff people available in the GardenHouse prepared to answer questions from customers. Stations will be set up with and stocked with material on roses, herb gardens, information on landscape design, container gardens, small space container gardening –like fairy gardens, and more.
A Hoerr Nursery IDEA Breakfast April 18 and 19, will feature a continental breakfast at 9-10 am Friday, and at 8-9 am, Saturday. The free breakfast will allow customers to grab a bagel, muffin, orange juice, and coffee or water, and informally meet with Hoerr Nursery garden and landscape experts. There’ll be ideas and an opportunity to resolve issues about customers’ gardens and landscapes. There is no charge for the experts or the breakfast and no sign-up; just arrive at the nursery for the first hour of each day. First come, first serve. Experts will accommodate as many customers as possible.
“We are excited about this IDEA Breakfast. This is the first time we have done this breakfast, so we don’t know exactly what the turn out will be, but we are excited about it,” said Mason.

WHEN CAN WE PLANT OUTSIDE?
“Just like everyone else, we are so eager for warm, sunny spring weather to get here! Many of our plants are perfect for planting right now. Many of annuals and the tropicals need the weather to catch up,” said Jane Mason, Marketing Director. “Our last likely frost date is May 15—basically a month from now—so fragile plants put out now may get nipped by frost. It’s tempting to put everything out now. And you can, just be aware that they might need to be replaced if we get a frost.”
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO UNTIL YOU PLANT OUTSIDE?
Rake out any debris in your perennial or annual beds.
Prune any “suckers” popping up around your trees and any broken stems or canes.
Clean and sharpen your tools. Replace or repair tools that are broken.
Mulch your annual and perennial beds. The plants will push through it.
Mulch around your trees. Create a circle of mulch that starts about 4” – 6” from the truck of your tree (never mulch up to the trunk) and extends a foot or two out.
