Why Garden?

In a recent survey, the National Gardening Association (NGA), reported that more people than ever -- a record 91 million households in 2005--- are gardening.

They also report that there is a direct link between the increase in the numbers of gardeners and peoples' growing desire to literally slow down and smell the roses.

NGA, Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company funded a study to examine why people are gardening, and here are some of their conclusions:

"Not only are Americans gardening in record numbers, but they also are saying that they see direct physical and emotional benefits from going outside and getting their hands dirty," said Bruce Butterfield, director of research for the NGA. "Our research shows that people see gardening as an outlet for their creativity and a way to recharge by reconnecting with nature."

They also found that gardening is moderate -- and sometimes strenuous -- exercise that incorporates many important elements of accepted exercise regimes, such as stretching and stance, repetition and movement. Some gardening even involves resistance principles similar to weight training.

Here are Nine Nice Reasons for Gardening that we have put together for you!

  • Garden to enjoy the process, the journey.
  • Garden as stress reliever, to enhance your spiritual relationships, or as a contemplative process in reconnecting with nature.
  • Garden for exercise, to keep joints moving, to stay --or get-- healthy.
  • Garden as a distraction or as a hobby to focus on.
  • Garden to add whimsy, beauty, color and vitality to your life.
  • Garden to learn.
  • Garden to meet people; share your gardening tasks and joy with a friend or family members.
  • Garden to grow healthy food or herbs or even to make money with your crops or your entrepreneurial skills.
  • Garden to be creative and adventurous.
