Planting Spring Flowering Bulbs

In order to produce spring blooms, bulbs require a resting period of 40 to 60 days at a temperature of 45°F or lower. During this so called “dormant” period the bulbs develop root systems in preparation for spring growth and flowering.

Planting Instructions

  • Dig a hole about 21/2 to 3 times the diameter of the bulb, and about 4 to 6 inches deep.
  • Add a tablespoon of bulb fertilizer or bone meal in the bottom of the hole and mix it up in the soil.
  • Place bulbs so that the top side is pointing up and the stem/root bottom is firmly in contact with the soil.
  • Cover the bulb with soil, but do not pack it down.
  • Add water to encourage root growth.
  • For maximum enjoyment and impact, group bulbs of the same color together at planting. For instance, a planting of 15 red tulips with 9-11 white hyacinths and a border of 35-50 grape muscari will create a dynamic display of color.

Controlling Pests
Squirrels, groundhogs, and chipmunks enjoy digging up and eating bulbs from the ground. If you have a large population of these animals in your garden, follow these tips to deter them:

  • Prior to planting, place bulbs in a paper sack, add a few drops of turpentine and shake well. The odor is unappealing to animals, but does not harm the bulbs.
  • Spray the bulbs with Ropel, a ready-to-use deterrent.
  • Plant daffodils and hyacinths. They are poisonous to small animals, and won’t be eaten.
