Follow the tips below to attract hummingbirds, butterflies and caterpillars to your garden!
- In general, hummingbirds prefer tubular or bell-shaped red and orange flowers. Once in your garden they will happily explore every flower. Butterflies like pinks, reds, oranges, yellows and purples. They see large masses of colors better than a few spotted areas.
- Plant a wide variety of flowering plants for cover and shelter. Some species of butterflies prefer native plants. Include a few in your garden or, in rural areas, let the weeds grow along the fence-lines or boundaries. The size of the plant is not important - you can attract butterflies and hummingbirds to a window box garden.
- Provide water, and perhaps an area of wet sand. Butterflies love to bask in the sun near water, and birds need water too.
- Restrict or eliminate your use of pesticides.
