How to Grow Annuals

When to Plant
Annuals may be planted after the last likely freeze date (in our area, this is May 15th). Any planting done before then should focus on frost-tolerant varieties.

What to Plant
Next, consider which annuals you want to plant. You can select by color, size, texture, height, fragrance, what will attract butterflies or varieties that you have been successful with before.

How to Plant

Soil Preparation
Preparing your soil will reap rewards for your annuals. When planting in the ground, add some organic matter like compost or peat moss to help to loosen soil and retain water. Work the organic material into the bed to a depth of about 2 – 4”. When planting in a container, fill it with a good quality potting soil.

Light Requirements
Check the information tags on the plants you purchase, and make sure you plant them in the appropriate area of your garden. Anything more than one half day of direct sunlight is considered full sun. Additionally, early morning sun is not as hot as afternoon sun, so a sun/shade plant can tolerate more morning sun than hot afternoon sun.

Spacing
For a very dense and full planting bed, plant annuals about 6 to 8” apart. If you want plants to dot along a border, you can allow greater space between them. When using vigorous varieties like wave petunias, spread them out a bit more – and pay more attention to the recommended spacing.

Layout
When planting annuals, always place shorter plants in front, and taller plants in back. Refer to the plant’s information tag for its expected height.

Watering
Most plants do not want wet feet, so pay attention to your annuals. When they are getting dry, water them. During hot and windy days, water your annuals daily if needed, especially those in containers.

Fertilization
Annuals can be fertilized with a light concentration of Scott’s Miracle Gro at each watering. Another alternative is to apply Osmocote, a granular slow release fertilizer early in the season. Read package instructions and do not use a concentration stronger than recommended.
