Almost 250 years ago Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus published a book named Species Plantarum ("The Species of Plants") and binomial nomenclature was born. This systematic approach to naming plants is still the universally recognized system used today. While many gardeners struggle with “Latin names” of plants, knowing a plant’s botanical name allows you to converse with gardeners all over the world.
Fall is a season of glorious change. We often think of majestic trees bursting into colorful reds, yellows, and oranges throughout the landscape. But don’t forget that many shrubs offer surprise color this time of year as well! Here are three of my favorites:
Hybridizers are working constantly to create a blue rose…
Now is the perfect time to get your shrub roses in shape for spring! During their first two seasons, allow the plant’s basic framework to develop, pruning only the small spindly shoots. In the third year trim off the top 1/3 of the plant allowing all branches to reach a uniform shape.
Mums are the delight of fall decorators – large, lush mounds of blooms that brighten containers and gardens for weeks.
The perfect gift for any occasion!
