Garden Stuff

GardenStuff... a great blog from gardeners to gardeners

Introducing a NEW garden/landscape-related blog!

Entries will be written by a number of staff members to cover a wide range of garden, landscape and hardscape topics. The authors range from horticulturists, certified arborists, garden professionals, master gardeners, landscape designers, a bee keeper! and hobby gardeners with specialized knowledge.

One of the goals of the GardenStuff Blog will be to trigger discussions. Although each GardenStuff Blog contributor works on keeping current on science and trends in the industry, the magic of the cyber-world is that the discussions can reveal new framing and threading of experiences to create a richer knowledge base.

Naturally, as a retail business, we are eager for you to come into our complex of nursery products, garden tools, flowers, trees, and landscape services and purchase our goods and services. But for this blog, most importantly, we are excited about sharing ideas!

Trees Aren’t the Only Plants with Fall Color

Posted by Ruth
Fall is a season of glorious change. We often think of majestic trees bursting into colorful reds, yellows, and oranges throughout the landscape. But don’t forget that many shrubs offer surprise color this time of year as well! Here are three of my favorites:

How a Tree Wants to be Treated

Posted by Marilyn Crain
Homeowners are continually surprised and well, saddened when I have to tell them the reason their tree is in bad shape is because of something they did that’s causing stress to their tree. Here are some examples:

Sounds to Relax By…

Fountains are not just for looks anymore. Most customers actually ask me about the sound of the fountain more than the style. But don’t get me wrong, you want an esthetically pleasing fountain, one which works with your garden, outdoor living space and theme of your home.

“Bee” Cautious with Chemicals

Posted by Marilyn Crain
Timing is a critical factor when using Powdered Garden Sevin in our yards. Honey bees mistake the microscopic structure of the toxic powder form for pollen because it has almost the identical octagon shape that pollen does. The bees carry the product back to their hives, unfortunately, killing all inside.

You Say “To-MAY-Toe” and I Say “To-MA-Toe”

Posted by Ruth
Almost 250 years ago Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus published a book named Species Plantarum ("The Species of Plants") and binomial nomenclature was born. This systematic approach to naming plants is still the universally recognized system used today. While many gardeners struggle with “Latin names” of plants, knowing a plant’s botanical name allows you to converse with gardeners all over the world.

Managing a Menace: Japanese Beetles

Posted by Dave Ploussard
I had a call this morning from a customer wanting to know what all the beetles were on her roses. “There are about 10 per blossom. They are eating the flowers and have eaten a lot of leaves already. They weren’t there the last time I looked! What do I do?”

Sometimes We Forget...

Posted by Jane Mason
Sometimes we get so caught up we forget the whole point...a garden is a celebration of the wonders and complexity of nature. After the effort of planting a garden, weeding and watering, etc., we sometimes forget to take the next step and simply enjoy our gardens and landscapes. Whether we have done the work ourselves, or hired professionals to do the work, it seems our lives get so complicated that the joy of sitting and breathing in the garden is often too far down our “to-do” list.
